Grinnell State Bank was founded in 1925 by the first President of the bank, C.A. Fraizer. In 1954, the bank was sold to F.A. Jones, who turned management over to his son, F. Addison Jones, late that year. Addison remained President of the bank until his son Dave took over and he now serves as Chairman of the Board. Two of Addison’s sons, David A. Jones and F. Austin Jones have assumed the management as President and Senior Executive Vice President. The fourth generation of the Jones Family is represented by two of Dave’s sons: Rusty Jones, EVP Security and Lending and Tony Jones, VP Lending; and two of Austin’s daughters: Alyson Jones, Accounts Payables/HR Assistant and Kelsey (Jones) McCulley, Personal Banker/Marketing.
The Jones Family and Grinnell State Bank have always been very involved in the community and value the relationships they develop with their customers and their communities.
Addison began his life as a Grinnellian in 1940 when the Fred A. Jones family moved to Grinnell from Tama. Addison always kept busy doing farm chores until the family moved into town during his college years. After his graduation from Grinnell College, Addison married Marion Austin, taught school and coached, worked at a downtown Chicago bank, and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1954 his father, Fred A. Jones, who had been a banker most of his life, had an opportunity to buy Grinnell State Bank, which he did, and Addison returned to Grinnell to join his father and start his career with the bank.
Today, Grinnell State Bank, the United States and the world have changed in many ways. Addison has watched the bank grow from $3 million to $275 million in total footings. The United States and the world will let you express your opinion much more now than they once did. Addison has been a part of many civic and church boards, along with local offices. He has also held state and national organizational duties. Throughout his 60 years at Grinnell State Bank our Bank’s name has remained the same and is still a locally owned community bank with a very strong capital position and management. We have kept pace with regulation demands so we are able to provide our customers with services that are available today. Sound banking experience and advice are what customers need today, which has been the hallmark at Grinnell State Bank for years.
David was born and raised in Grinnell; it’s where he has lived most of his life. He is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa where he received his Bachelor of Science in Economics. He received his post graduate degree from the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. There were difficult economic times when David began to learn lending in the early 1980’s. The Savings & Loan crisis affected all Iowans, especially those involved in Agriculture. The experience David gained through those troublesome days resulted in some very valuable lessons – wisdom that still influences Grinnell State Bank today. To help people, first and foremost, has been the driving mission throughout his career.
David has seen the banking world change dramatically in his life – he was tasked with implementing the first in-house computer software program in the 80’s. He brought in the Bank’s first ATM, as well as debit cards. The Grinnell location has gone through 3 remodels and an expansion. He has successfully led the bank to the point where it has recently expanded to new locations in the Des Moines Metro area – bringing our reputational service to a growing market.
David has 3 sons. Two are employed by Grinnell State Bank and one is an Iowa Attorney. He has served several years on the Director’s Board of the Community Bankers of Iowa, and continues to be an avid student of banks, and the banking industry. Through the years he has enjoyed war gaming, and is a hobbyist, building all types of models from remote aircraft, military vehicles and many different scales of trains, some of which run in his backyard garden. He enjoys spending time with family including his 8 grandchildren, fishing on his pontoon boat and traveling, of which, includes an occasional motorcycle tour.
Austin is an Iowa boy. Born, raised, educated, works and lives in the great state of Iowa for his entire life. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a BA in Mathematics and graduated from the University Of Wisconsin Graduate School Of Banking. Austin works at Grinnell State Bank as the Senior Executive Vice President and serves on the Board of Directors. He oversees the Investment, Trust, and Computer departments of the bank and sits on the Executive Committee. Austin is also the President of Grinnell Investor Center, which is the Bank Full Service Brokerage and Insurance Division. It offers a full line of investments, Property, Commercial and Life Insurance Products.
Some fun facts about Austin: he has been married to his wonderful wife since 1986. He is a father of three beautiful daughters, two of which work for Grinnell State Bank full time and one attends Monmouth College. He is proud to have participated in 21 RAGBRAIs, which is an annual bicycle ride across Iowa. He has being doing Triathlons since 1990 and has completed three Ironman Length Triathlons and in 2013 was ranked in the top 2% of all triathletes in his age group. Austin swam in High School and has officiated swimming since 1982. Additionally, Austin has been very active in University and Community Theaters. He has played King Arthur in Camelot in two different productions, along with numerous dramatic roles.
For doing good in his community, he is the Past President of the Greater Poweshiek Community Foundation; Treasurer of the Grinnell Area Arts Council; and Treasurer of the United Church of Christ Congregational – Grinnell. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Les Hale Foundation a division of the University of Northern Iowa Foundation. He is a Trustee of the Mayflower Homes, a senior retirement housing community in Grinnell. Austin has also been active with Grinnell Regional Medical Center Foundation; Grinnell Kiwanis Club; Grinnell Bicycle Club; Mayflower Homes Foundation; Galaxy Youth Center; American Cancer Society and the City of Grinnell Mayors Council.
Michael was raised on a farm in Pocahontas County, Iowa, and attended Iowa Lakes Community College and Iowa State University. Mike has been working in the banking industry for 20 years and has been working for Grinnell State Bank for 15 years. Mike is now the Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Lending officer for the bank.
Rusty began his career with Grinnell State Bank in 1999 working as a teller while attending Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. After graduating with honors and a brief time selling financial services in Chicago, he came back to Grinnell to work for the bank in earnest in 2004. Much like Addison, Austin and David Jones, Rusty completed the Graduate School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin and is presently involved in many areas of the bank. Rusty currently lives in Grinnell with his wife and three children and is very committed to the growth and progress of our local communities.
Alison was born and raised in rural Iowa. She has moved throughout her Business Career within the Midwest. Alison started in retail, where over the years she has held many management positions for companies such as DSW Shoes, Scheels All Sports, VonMaur Department Stores and Areopostale Stores.
Alison transitioned into the Field of Banking in 2008 for Grinnell State Bank. She Manages Human Resources, Bank Operations, Marketing and Bank Project Coordination. As part of the Executive Team, Alison is involved with the Strategic Planning Focus Group.
Banking has become her passion and she Expects Strong levels of educated, well-rounded employees to provide the Highest Level of Customer Service throughout the Organization.
Alison’s family is a top priority for her as well. She has five children ranging in age from 10 months to 15 years. They live in a small rural community. She places an importance on volunteering and giving back. She is a part of the local Methodist Church, Kids Music Director, Youth Group and involved with the Education Foundation Board in her home town.
